A certificate states a date. Nothing happens on that date. Whether anyone acts depends on whether a person reads small print during a busy shift.
Nobody owns the checking
The plant manager assumes maintenance tracks it. Maintenance assumes quality does. Neither has a reason to look until an audit.
Certificates are forged because they are printable
A document with a stamp is reproducible by anyone with a scanner, and this is a known trade in some sectors.
The consequences land far away
A drifting scale overcharges customers for a year, or a gauge misreads, and the connection back to a lapsed certificate is made much later.
If you calibrate instruments, or depend on them.
Still at the design stage. What would help is a picture of how validity is tracked where you work, and what a missed expiry has cost.
